Diseases Increase from Warming
Big news on the Global Warming front! Environmental change is often the cause of spreading disease. Look at this quote from a Reuters article on February 21, 2005. Notice the bit on rising temperatures.
Deforestation, unplanned urban sprawl, poor waste management, pollution, building of roads and dams and rising
temperatures are among the aggravating factors. [Italics mine.]
Looks like we are in for some warm weather right? Well I'm not so sure. It seems like the article is a little bit confused. Check the final paragraph out.
In the United States, cases of the tick-borne Lyme disease in New York and Connecticut have surged as humans
have moved into forested areas where the deer that carry the ticks thrive, the report says.
It seems like scientists are confused with the difference between people doing dumb things and negative changes in our environment. They are observing pretty simple changes and chalking it up to an environmental boogeyman! Could it be that Environmental issues have nothing to do with increases in diseases? Maybe last year there were more people, and thus more reports of diseases.
Here I'll write an example of how this poor logic is often used.
In California there have been more bicycle accidents than in any time in the last five years. Experts think that the increase in urban sprawl is one cause. Also, global warming has increased tremendously the number of "summer fun days" for kids. Experts note that as temperatures rise, so do reports of malaria, sunburn, heatstroke and dehydration. The bicycle accidents are one sign of an alarming increase in catastrophies caused by global warming.
I bet a nice pair of pants would prevent tick-borne Lyme disease more effectively than spending billions of dollars trying to reduce gas emissions. But then again, I'm not scientist.
